E-Collar Introduction Course

Overview

Our E-collar introduction courses comes with 4 private lessons that last an hour each over a span of 4 weeks. This course is designed for dog owners who already have a solid obedience foundation and are ready to take their dogs training to the next level— reliability, freedom, and off-leash control in real-world environments.

This program focuses on properly pairing the E-Collar with your dog’s existing foundational or advanced obedience, ensuring the tool is used clearly, fairly, and humanely. The E-Collar is NOT a punishment device—it is a communication tool that extends your reach and reinforces what your dog already understands.

Training Focuses On:

  • Proper E-Collar introduction and conditioning

  • Positive and negative reinforcement explained clearly

  • The rules and responsibilities of E-Collar use

  • Timing, clarity, and consistency with commands

  • Working with distractions safely and effectively

  • Trusting your dog with and without the E-Collar

  • Safety guidelines and when ( and when not) to take the E-Collar outside

What to expect each week

Week 1: Positive Association + Foundations

We begin by creating a strong, positive association with the E-Collar. This session focuses heavily on owner education-teaching you how to correctly pair the stimulation with commands so your dog understands the E-Collar as an extension of you, not a form of punishment.

Training takes place in a low distraction environment using a 6-foot leash, emphasizing clarity, communication, and calm understanding.

Week 2: Timing + Light Distractions

Week 2 focuses on refining timing, pressure and corrections, while introducing distance with a 10 foot leash while continuing to strengthen the pairing process. We introduce light distractions inside the home, helping both you and your dog gain confidence and consistency with the tool.

Week 3: Recall + Freedom (Long Line Work)

Week 3 focuses on moving the training outdoors using a 15-30 foot long line, with a strong focus on recall and responsiveness. Your dog begins to earn freedom through reliability, not guesswork, while learning to succeed around similar distractions in a new environment.

Week 4: Off-Leash Proofing

In our final week, we begin working off-leash with real-world distractions. This is where everything you’ve learned comes together, you’ll work alongside another dog or in a high-distraction environment to test reliability, identify remaining gaps, and leave with a clear plan for continued success after the course.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand how to use the E-Collar correctly and responsibly

  • Have clear communication with your dog at a distance

  • Build trust both on and off the E-Collar

  • Know exactly what to continue working on after the course

Equipment Requirement (Non-Negotiable)

For safety, reliability, and consistency, we only work with E-Collars from Dogtra OR E-Collar Technologies.

FAQs

Is E-Collar training painful or harmful to dogs?

No, when used properly, the E-Collar uses very low-level stimulation designed to communicate, NOT punish. Most dogs respond at levels that are barely noticeable and simply help redirect attention.

Is an E-Collar the same as a shock collar?

No. Modern, high quality E-Collars use precise, adjustable stimulation. The goal is communication and clarity—Not pain or fear. We DO NOT use outdated or low-quality “shock collars.”

Is E-Collar training appropriate for puppies?

E-collar training is not recommended for young puppies; we suggest waiting until at least 8 months of age, once a solid foundation of obedience and structure has been established. The collar should only be layered on after the dog clearly understands the behaviors being reinforced.

Can I skip or reschedule My Private Lessons?

Private lessons must be completed within the programs timeline unless otherwise approved by trainer.
